A play about the first relationship each of us has with this world—the one with our mother. A relationship that cannot help but leave its mark, that cannot help but influence our relationship with ourselves, with others, and, ultimately, with the world—the way we position ourselves and navigate our own lives and those of those around us. A relationship that can be a gift, but also the greatest trap.
From Marta Petreu’s overwhelming and expansive autobiographical novel, we have chosen to explore, through the lens of the mother-daughter relationship, the theme of family ties, of mechanisms inherited and only later processe —these layers that both cover and, at the same time, open wounds. In the performance, these relationships are revisited through a reenactment, like a journey back along the current of water toward memories that conceal whether deeply buried or more visible—the lack of love, fears, shame, betrayals, neglect, powerlessness, mistrust, and their effects, passed down from one generation to the next.
